Club Talk: The Falkland Islands Identification Project

At the end of the Falklands War, hundreds of dead Argentine soldiers were left scattered, half-buried across the battlefields. Their government refused to help identify them. British soldiers gathered and buried them in a cemetery. Half of them could not be identified at the time and their crosses simply bore the epitaph, ‘An Argentine Soldier Known unto God’. As a result of a chance meeting in 2008, Club member Colonel Geoffrey Cardozo set about contacting the families and coercing the Argentine to identify the fallen. He will speak of the seemingly insurmountable challenges he faced and recount the amazing stories of mothers finally being able to say goodbye to their sons. The Falkland Islands Identification Project is now used by the ICRC as a model of good practice and as a template for similar operations including in Ukraine, Gaza and elsewhere.

Club Talk: Dreams, Delusions and Disasters

Throughout history, and all over the world, seemingly intelligent people have made foolish decisions based on delusions. This has affected love affairs, politics, finance, science, warfare, showbusiness and even sport. It has also wrecked marriages, bankrupted millionaires, lost battles, destroyed empires, brought down leaders and royalty, split religions, ruined reputations, changed climates, thwarted gangsters and even exposed sex pests. Donough O’Brien shines a spotlight on 150 intriguing, and often hidden, corners of such calamities… And in so doing they highlight over 650 characters who prove to be both fascinating and flawed. Dreams, Delusions & Disasters is an absorbing take on history.
